It's My Birthday!

It doesn't matter what age!

This young lady sat down for supper, looked around and exclaimed,

"It's my birthday!

Don't I get to determine the supper rules tonight?"

She obviously wanted to open her gifts first,

just like she did when she was a little girl.

After a wonderful evening sitting around the table,

she jumps up and says,

"I get to have a Starbuck's breakfast right?"

just like she did when she was a little girl.

Then suddenly she's off looking...thinking...

"What's up I ask her?"

"It's pajama day tomorrow at school.

There's no better day than to wear PJ's on my birthday."

Oh...but she totally forgot that she had packed her PJ's,

located in one of the hundred's of boxes in the shop.

"Mom, do you have PJ's?"

She always knew she could count on me,

the same way, just like she did when she was a little girl.

Oh, my heart took a spin for a minute.

Somehow I didn't expect that question anymore.

Of course somewhere...quickly I located them.

And away she goes,

modelling her mother's PJ's in a variety of styles,

just like she did when she was a little girl.

Why wait for tomorrow if you can wear your Mom's PJ's right now.

Hey Mom's, always keep a pair of PJ's around.

You just never know what when the kids may need them.

Happy Birthday Girl...

We know it's your birthday and we know you love to celebrate,

just like you did when you were a little girl.

"OK MOM, It's enough now...."

And we will continue to celebrate all weekend.

Yes, she once was a little girl,

and she's grown to be a delightful young women,

and yet she enjoys to share life with all of us,

just like she did when she was a little girl.

How Does One Pack?

We've waited a long time..
They held us in suspense.
Judy and I would plan...but not plan...and just played along.

These men were texting, phoning, reading...and planning for months.
They even held executive meetings.

Finally they gave us a few hints, a print out of the weather conditions.

"Take something formal, like a wedding."

That could mean many different things today.

Finally the morning arrived and we found our selves south bound to Vegas!

But something was missing.

We did not know how to pack for Vegas, or did we?

Judy and I looked at each other, knowing quite well,

that we were farm girls...not the kind that go to Vegas.

We found these trendy jackets, $29.99 on special at the airport.

We looked at each other and laughed.

Yes, this would be our signature design for the weekend.

Our men never lost us...they made a statement.

Even the Hop On Hop Off bus recognized us at the end of our tour.

There she goes.

Obviously those jackets dictated our wardrobe.

JEANS!

We enjoyed a birthday breakfast on a street side cafe just outside the Bellagio fountains,

a great side street for people watching and fashions galore.

But then things got serious.

We were handed some tickets to the Celine Dion Concert playing at Caesar's Palace.

We dashed away...knowing that we needed to ~~purchase~~ check out the styles,
...and enjoyed the fashion trends,

from formals to rhinestone lace-ups.

And of course, any dress from Vegas needs to be accented by a Fascinater Hat.

I'm sure we have won the approval of our friend Jill, the Hat Specialist.

Don't we look stunning?

Our men didn't even recognize us anymore.

I think by now...we were feeling like we had made a fashion statement.

We were escorted to the Coliseum at Caesar's Palace,

made exclusively for Celine's performances.

Her show featured 31 musicians, consisting of a full orchestra and band.

The show’s concept is one-of-a-kind and includes Celine’s

biggest hits performed with a stunning visual presentation.

There are times when I can figure things out...

but I never imagined attending a live concert by Celine Dion.

And as you all know, photos are prohibited...

but just one...please, no flash... right?

And here are your glamorous Las Vegas girls.

Do we look much different?

We look very different than most of them!

We knew how to pack...It's call Black.

We left our jackets behind for this special performance and

were actually waiting for our fur stoles to arrive.

At the end of the evening...we were more than confident in our packing skills,

as we kicked off our heels, and dug out our comfort shoes.

Yes, we know how to act, we know how to dress, and we know how to pack...

If any of you need any consultations...we will be opening shop soon.

It will be a memory etched in our minds forever.

Countdown Begins!

It was just a few years back...

Fall of 2007 that we met again!

Way back in high school we were best friends....

but in the past years the old friendship has tightened again.

And to be honest with you, it feels like nothing has changed.
She's the gal who lives a few miles down from me in My Front Porch!

She's a hard one to beat...she plays detective and can figure out anything.

But not this time....

And guess what, we're both flying high today...

there's another surprise...

Those men of ours have been keeping top secrets.

"Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to the other.

WHAT? YOU TOO?

I thought I was the only one."

But at the end of a day...we're still just being our old selves.

"Remember it takes a long time to grow an old friend."

Winter Wonderland

These icicles brought smiles to my face this morning.

Aha.....winter has arrived.

My favorite view from my front door.

A heavy blanket of snow...in the eastern end of the valley.

I love the rustling sounds created by our Oak tree.

I ran to church, but could not keep focused.

This was a perfect day to hit the ~~slopes~~ fields.

They all came out!

I remember vividly how my father would hook up the tractor

and pull us on toboggans, tractor tubes and whip us around the wide-open fields.

Now we get to introduce our grand kids to these activities.

Sibling rivalry, full force all day long.

And guess what? I don't need to interfere anymore..

Drift and I have something in common...We ignore them.

There's a couple faces missing...I wonder who?

I miss you guys!

Has anything changed.

Now you know what they were arguing about.

Drift and I both had the same opinion!

Just have fun!

My man always has a happy smile, when he's on his JD!

A JD does the job anywhere, scraping barns, scraping driveways, pulling toboggans.

The day was not completed, until I, Princess Peach jumped on with the boys.

I wonder who was wearing my snow pants?

But who cares...just jump on and have fun!

FAVE Five ~

Another week, and the New Year is rapidly moving along..

and there's always some extra events that make me smile.

I have only one sister....we are about 12 years apart.

She's busy with her young family, and I'm busy with my adult children.

She called tonight and we can cover a large territory in a quick hurry.

And yet we smiled, shed some tears, and felt like we understood each other.

It's just a good feeling to know that we've both been heard.

Our church's congregation is divided into Life Groups.

We gather together to connect...develop new friendships...

help, support and encourage each other to grow in relationships with God.

This week we were challenged by a chapter in Ann VosKamps' book,

"One Thousand Gifts"

She challenges us and dares us to live fully right where we are.

We always end our evening by sharing the day to day battles and praise items.

This week it felt like we were an ER ward: as we listened to the concerns, hurts and pains.

It's wonderful when we can come together and share knowing that we have a common faith.

Better yet, is when praise items are sent via email during the week,

confirming God's goodness and answers to our prayers.

A nice long chat to an old time friend...just talking, pondering, giggling.

We are both feeling some excitement in the air....

A visit by Mario and friends.

What an exciting afternoon when this little fellow showed up.

He's full of action, jokes and smiles.

He'll keep you on your toes.

Today this little fellow (Mario) insisted on calling me "Princess Peach."

I was actually quite flattered,

and looked her up on line....

now I know, only to well, that I too can be a Princess.

Where Do You Hide Your Stash?

Last night I had to make a last minute dash to the grocery store.

You know how that is?

You think you have it all and there's always something missing.

I quickly walked up and down the aisles.

To my surprise I saw one large shopping cart...

filled with chocolates....to be reduced at 50 percent.

I stopped...I looked, I almost opened the wrappings and licked.

I know that the other night we opened a Lindt bar...

and I could not find it today...

Somebody snitched it.

I'm not referring to the young ones....I also have adults hanging out.

Who snitched my chocolate?

With this in mind, I need to find a new spot.

FAVE FIVE ~ First Week

It's been some time in which I joined Susanne out in Alberta for her Favorite Fives....

and yet I always sensed it was a quick

way for me to recap and share my week with my readers.

Sometimes, between life, work and family it's hard to stay connected.

But I truly love the fun format that Susanne has created for us.

This has been a more than usual busy week,

as some events have been unexpected things and yet, that's what brings meaning to life.

A moment in time!

She picked up her Opa's violin...and we tuned it, and we polished it.

And then we started...to play the beautiful piece of Pachelbel's Canon in D.

I think it's been about 10 years since we played music together.

That was one timeless gift to remember.

A near mishap!

Avalanche Advisory warnings were high this past weekend on our coastal mountains.

A group of back country skiers entered the steep chute in the Steep Creek area.

A 30 year old male was caught and carried 475 meters down the chute

sustaining a facial and pelvis fracture. He was partially buried and dug out by his touring group.

My daughter was one of the companions who helped dig him out.

We are more than thankful for the quick reactions of the rescue squad.

I'm not sure how I can strap her down into a safety zone!

Thank God for some miraculous recoveries.

This week I attended a funeral for a young friend,

who knew how to be classy not only on the outside, but also on the inside.

She loved to shop, Shop, and SHOP some more.

Even on her way home from chemo treatments she had to stop at Winners.

And that's exactly where I met her not so long ago...

shopping just for the perfect decor piece for her newly built home.

She was high energy...She loved people.

I was just a young bride when she invited us over for a beautifully decorated

table scape and she served us Cornish hens. What a delicacy.

She was known for running around the farm in rhinestones.

She had a quest for deep character. She was balanced.

And she prioritized and valued her walk with Christ.

The closing song, "The Holy City" was a stellar performance sung by another dear friend.

Once more, this was a reminder on how do we want to live our lives.

Yes, we will miss you Viola...

This week I took the time to review many beautiful folders of photos.

This is my time of year I love to create digitalized photo albums.

I welcome the quietness of the winter months to reflect on family and friends.

These are the moments I crave.

Quiet classical music can be heard in the background as I pour over the photos.

Tonight we enjoyed the view of the most spectacular Christmas Tree I have ever seen.

It was a 12 foot tree decorated with 1000 white lights, with white and silver bulbs.

It reflected through out the windows of the house.

My camera was missing...

Candles were glowing in the evening as we sat around and visited.

I love this time of year, as so often I am too busy during December,

and therefore I enjoy lingering awhile, before I begin to remove my decorations.

We ended off the evening by playing an old fashioned dice game called "Nuscht."

Necessary Beginnings!

I've been thinking through the past few days...

What message do I really want to convey to all my friends?

The other day I shared with a friend that I was reading a book called,

"Necessary Endings" by Dr. Henry Cloud.

And my friend responded by saying,

"It's time you think about 'Necessary Beginnings'."

I remember the time we needed to quit dairying...

I remember the time when we changed churches...

I remember the time when I retired from my work world....

I remember the time the kids left home...

I remember the time when relationships changed and ended...

I remember the time when my mom passed away...

I remember watching the final Olympic closing....

And so when I look back over my years, I've realized that

endings are necessary and often can become strategic steps to something better.

If we cannot recognize endings in a positive light and end well,

the "better" will never be able help us develop New Beginnings.

Somehow I always find it difficult to accept the ending of an old year,

and almost stressful to think of the beginning of a new year.

It's like we want to "tidy up" all those loose ends as the year closes.

We want to get our entire year caught up before the new year starts,

and there's something about us which makes us determined to do it.

Then there is the temptation to set up an elaborate set of resolutions

for the coming year so we can get it right, right off the bat.

We get down right hard on ourselves and beat ourselves up.

So let's quit beating ourselves up and when things are not making sense,

lets look how we can begin to see the changes that come our way,

with a positive light and assert that something better will come our way.

I hope for the willingness to live this year in a way that will be gentle to myself...

one day at a time and to know how to enter into the "battlefield of life,"

continuing to meditate on Jesus and his powerful message of love.

My goals will be to reflect on newness and progress in the New Year!

Life is a journey and you get to chart your very own fresh tracks for the New Year!

I wish all my readers an insightful and peaceful New Year!

The Missing Skis!

You could not of asked for a better day.

Sunshine and dry roads made for a quick trip up the mountain.

Snowcapped peaks of Whistler.

Who would of guessed it actually rained most of the time.

But meanwhile, we made the best of everything.

We packed and we unpacked all the stuff.

Honestly, we kept piling it on....

But the story goes on to say....

"Who's got my skis?"

I got to the room and organized all the stuff...the way it made sense to me.

I put all the skis in a blue plastic recycling bin....

Isn't that the natural thing to do with skis with melting snow?

So after a few days...we were about to try out the new skis.

Where were they?

We searched underneath every bed, closet, every nook and cranny.

Who could of removed them?

Suddenly it dawned on me.

I had put the skis in the ~~recycling bin.~~
In the what????

Sure enough the chamber maids had removed them.

I quickly phoned housekeeping.

They reported that all recyling goes straight into a large bin.
They could not be retrieved.

~~~

I was beginning to smile...and asked myself?

Why didn't I clue in?

But why on earth would the chamber maids take down perfectly new equipment?

Anyways, it was truly my fault.

~~~~~

I took a walk downstairs and chatted to the manager, and confessed my cardinal sin.

He saw my apologetic face, yet noticed that I was smiling sheepishly.

To make a long story short,

the manager followed up on the report of the missing skis,

and they were returned to our room on Christmas morning.

I don't think they'll let me live this one down!

We strolled through the village in the rain to the Gondola.

A ride up the Gondola would take us to the Tube Park!

But one little fellow became disturbed....

He did not quite measure up!

He had a few limitations.

Soon he realized that tubing by himself was way more fun than with me.

But one thing for sure, I could still wrestle him down.

His laughter could be heard for miles.

This fellow went for the big ones....

But not without contemplation.....

And at the end of the day he was of course the first to say,

"I want to go back to the HOTEL!"

Their stocking were filled and and the anticipation was rising.

And of course, Auntie Mikki kept them entertained.

A good evening cannot end without a good hand of Rook!

The competition rages in this group.

And guess who claimed the big King-size bed?

He thought this bed was way to big for his Oma & Opa!

I enjoyed a quiet stroll through the village and heard voices singing carols.

New memories were built for all this year.

I could not resist one last glimpse of the Olympic Rings, reminding me of 2010!

Let It Snow, Let it Snow!

This year's Christmas has taken on a new twist for us.

We've had our Christmas Eve with the family on Saturday, Dec.17th.

But this week we have all been dreaming about snow.

I love the snow...you can bring it to me any time.
Let it Snow, Let it Snow! This melody is ringing in my mind.
The weather predictions do not forecast snow.

I want to share my best Christmas memory ever.

Many bloggers have shared about early childhood Christmas memories,

but mine happened four years ago.

It snowed and snowed and snowed on Dec. 24th, 2008.

It was beginning to accumulate and it was truly beginning to look like a real white Christmas.
Church programs were cancelled.

We skipped church, as we had no choice, forgot about all schedules that evening,

pulled on our toques and snow gear...and away we went.

There was nothing like having a Snow Day on Christmas Eve.

Tractor, toboggans, tire tubes, and CANOES!

Yes, that's a canoe...being pulled by a tractor!

This was a memory that they still all talk about and would love to relive.

We watched the children open their gifts last week and watched the mounting anticipation on their faces.
Mario and friends dominated the show and tell that night.

What? Personalized Taekwondo Belt Brackets, from Auntie Suzie.

And then came their personalized capes that are truly needed for identification purposes.

Who knows what to expect with demonstrations from this ski instructor.

Auntie Mikki made sure the boys had the right equipment for skiing.
They are ready to go, skis, poles, goggles and capes.
They are heading out the door.
There will not be an identity crisis with these boys.

But this little guy barely got through his gifts and fell asleep...was out for the night.
I wish I could fall asleep that quick!

Meanwhile, freshly baked gingersnaps, are packed away with many other goodies.

The vehicles are packed and we're heading off to the mountains.

Young and old!

Skis, toboggans, Christmas music, candles, stockings, plenty of grub, and a Christmas spirit.
And we will once more try to relive the spirit of Christmas.

Just a quick impromptu moment.

As I was browsing this morning...

I saw a photo...

Judy sent me the link.

We like exchanging ideas...

Run over to Judy's and see the perfect name card.

My place cards took on a version of their own!

After hours of tying ribbons and glue not sticking...

I grabbed the glue gun and things happened quickly.

Out came the Popsicle sticks, toques and scarves.

Each person had to identify a skier that represented their style.

Lots of laughs and smiles as they stopped, posed and identified there style.

How can two bloggers come up with two completely different versions?
But the outcome was the same!

Have a good day as the real countdown begins.

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas

If you were to drop in today...

you'd be greeted by a fleet of lights stapled by those little hands of the grands,
into our wooden fence bordering our driveway.

Sparkling wreathes would welcome you to our front door.

And as you turned the knob, these little trees would welcome you bringing warmth.

And my timeless Carolers are placed carefully on the mantle and

you would hear them singing, those old Christmas carols, from every room in the house.

Garland would be hanging from window sills and mantles just giving that peaceful ambiance.

You would detect the Christmas tree which has finally made it's way into our family room,

awaiting the cheerful chatter of those little boys.

"How many more sleeps?"

The bulbs are placed, layered and sparkling in the tree...

but something is missing....

Who took my Monkey Ladder, another timeless children's ornament?
And I can't find my fondue pot?????

Smells of freshly baked cookies would greet you,

ready and packaged with hugs and prayers for some special deliveries.

And you would spot an early gift...

Someone knew that my hand beater was shot.

He knew the perfect moment, as always.

And so today...he will have one or two or maybe three of his favorites.

I remember my Grandmother making these cookies many years ago.

The evening candles are lit...

and I think you'd find me wrapping a few gifts tonight,

praying quietly over each gift.

Praying that each one will find Peace, Joy, Hope, and Love.

Our family will be celebrating this weekend,

as others will be travelling abroad next week and celebrating with more families.

Am I feeling ready?

There is always a tinge of anxiousness.

Dear Father, amid all the intoxicating smells of this season,

remind me that love is the sweetest scent of all...

and it is both costly and precious.

Write your signature on my heart,

so that others may breathe in the scent of Your love in my life.

When Can We Decorate?

"Oma, when can we pull out the stable?"

the voices echoed of those little ones.

And today we brought out the Stable, and

the wooden collection of stable toys

that were used by my children.

And today...we read the same book,

the same story..

and set up the nativity scene.

I love savoring the memories with my little boys of Christmas past

and rediscovering the true meaning of the birth of Christ,

the Light of the World.

Anticipation

The image of wonder and awe...

tiny children standing on tip toes,

or jumping up and down waiting for Christmas.

Somehow they can't figure out how long it takes to the big day,

but we all know they just can't wait.

Somehow as we grow older, we loose a lot of that eager impatience.

For me, my waiting on tiptoes turns into trying to survive the season.

And so it is that once more I too want to wait for the right attitude.

The right attitude for Advent is a child's attitude;

eyes wide open,

watching for the wonder,

watching for the opportunities

waiting on tiptoe- just like a little kid waiting for Christmas.

Five Minute Hazelnut Roll!

I'm not sure about these gals anymore,

but as you can see, I bailed out.

As I mentioned earlier...

we are being splashed frequently in the media,

and some of us would rather stay home,

garden, bake, rake leaves or prepare for the Grey Cup game.

LIONS Continue to Roar!

One great day listening to the history of the BC Lions...

their stories, their goals, their statistics,

just knowing that I was two years old when BC Lions started officially playing.

I grew up in a house hold of brothers, and we watched Saturday night football.

It was a week ago...when I tried to solicit for Grey Cup tickets on FB.

I was hoping I had some generous friends.

Who would of known that the BC Lions could of dug themselves out of there 5-0 loss,

in the early part of the season and finish in top place.

I found a few hard core fans and we set the place into action.

No line-ups!

No traffic jams!

No food line-ups.

Just a comfortable couch!

We were all glued to TSN Sports screen followed by

a few hollers and screeches.

There were some close calls in the final quarter that made us a bit wary.

It was a great feeling to see the Grey Cup being handed over to the BC Lions,

for the first time since 1994!

Congratulation to the Lions who defeated Bombers 34-23!

It didn't take long as we began to have our final celebration party.

Cheese cake desserts with orange topping mingled with mandarin orarnges,

made the perfect table setting...as we all sat down and had our post game debriefings.

Kudos to my Winnipeg friends and family!

Yes, your home town boy, Andrew Harris, was honored

the Most Valuable Canadian Player!

You have lots to be proud of!

First Advent

A light dusting of snow,

amidst the falling leaves still showing their radiance.

This is truly the beginning of the Advent Season.

I can picture the Advent's wreath.

A time to quiet our hearts and reflect about the reason for the season.
A time to help our little ones capture the real message.
This year will be different for all of us.
But different is good as we continue to create and build new dreams.

A King will be born.

This is the time to prepare our hearts for the coming of God's Son.

May we reflect the light of Jesus this season and give Hope to others
and recognize that we all are offered this special HOPE!
Each week we will light another candle signifying...

HOPE! LOVE! JOY! PEACE!

True Confessions of a MGCC Gal

Many of you think that the MGCC Gals have their lives together in the kitchen.
Daily, you see us posting these beautiful looking recipes.
We try to create a presentation style that meets the eye.
You've seen us splattered all over the newspapers...
Amazon.ca loves us.
Global TV at noon, this Saturday, Nov.26th invites us to sit on the red couch.
Book signings...
Baking and cooking demonstrations...

But meanwhile we use our kitchens as a science lab
and many times things flop.

Today I'm crossing the line...

This week I dug up an old favorite recipe of my son's.

After I quickly whipped up the first batch, I was fit to be tied.

I seemed to have lost the touch.

I was scraping dough off the sheets and attempting to dump them in the garbage when...

the thought, was prompted by my 4 year old,

"Why don't we give these crumbs to the birds."

I dumped them hastily into my new "Thatsa" bowls.

The man of the house was quick to reply from his office...

"You are not dumping those...someone will eat those crumbs."

By mid afternoon, another young one appeared at my doorstep.

"Oma, you are not throwing those in the garbage."

By now...the bowl of crumbs was nearly finished.

He said,

"These are the best cookies you've ever made."

And guess who took the rest home.

As I stated earlier, I'm stepping out of line today...

I can't keep this from our readers any longer.

I've heard of several other MGCC Gals who have admitted and shared their stories,

over the past few weeks and days.

I wonder how many of them will step up to the plate

and share their true confessions!

Let's see what happens out there.

Yes, I agree we are confidential...but not in the kitchen!

Let's see who comes out of the woodwork.

One More MUMPHF!

We've heard theses words over and over...

"ONLY ONE MORE MUMPHF!"

"And how old will you be?"

And he fell in love with Bill, his friendly little hairy puppet!

And we told stories all night under his favorite blanket.

Ah ha, he wanted to become bigger than his brother.

So everyone had fun...growing their legs.

And as we sat as adults, drinking our coffee and enjoying banana creamed pie,

it was such a delight to look over and see the two brothers playing quietly together.

That's not always the case!

But Oma, "First I need to make a VIS!"

And he took all his Mario characters and decorated his own cake.

And of course big brother was delighted to light the candles.

I don't know how many times, we let him blow out the candles.

And in one more MUMPHF it's Christmas!

We all had a wonderful time as the little one celebrated his 4th birthday.

Dragging Low!

It's the time of year for fresh hazelnuts.

I love to bake and cook with them substituting them wherever possible.

They are high in antioxidants and provide you with nutritional value.

You can probably smell these muffins coming fresh out of my oven.

It's always a moment like this...

I was walking along with Mikki, and our conversation went like this,

"Could I please have my camera?"

"Why do you always need your camera?"

We laughed hilariously as we saw this old truck screeching around the corner.

"Well," I said....."Now you know why I need my camera!"

It's when you least expect it.

Arrival of Special Guests!

We waited with excitment.

We had been anticipating this weekend to be somewhat unusal,

with the gathering of the the dignitaries coming together for the

Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit to be held in Hawaii, 2011.

Little did we know that he would arrive in in the small town of Ko Olina,

a small resort for tourists fleeing from the tourist filled beaches of Waikiki.

But what we did know, was that 'Air Force One' was to arrive

at about 10:40 pm Friday evening, November 11th at the

Pearl Harbor-Hickam Airport.

Those details had me slip out on my balcony at 10:30 pm,

waiting, watching and listening for the sounds of engines.

Sure enough...the 'Air Force One' glided over our hotel,

just as the local networks had indicated.

Hawaii was chosen to host the APEC Summit 2011.

There, on the distance shores, stands the Ihilani JW Marriott Hawaii Hotel,

the prime location property of Ko Olina,

where President Obama and Prime Minister Steven Harper,and Delegates

would continue there discussions of regional issues including trade and economic cooperation.

I was used to walking the three mile ocean promenade every day...but not today.

The barriers became apparent and security made itself obvious.

It made me feel restless and anxious.

But for some reason, today, I was feeling somewhat barred from my peaceful morning walk.

Where would I find my morning coffee and newspaper?

But, not for long...I smuggled myself through the gates,

posed with an APEC ID and carried on my daily duties.

I thought I would make one quick final inspection of the Ihilani Hotel.

When you walked through the front lobby,

one was most heartily greeted by a beautiful poster draping over the triangular pillars.

The hallways and corridors were sparkling clean.

I had observed extra cleaning crews giving careful details to the lobby.

The front lobby table was covered with the most exquisite Hawaiian floral bouquets.

And guess who greeted me at the Information Desk?

It felt like another work day at the office.

I think I should of considered changing my attire for the Presidential event.

It would of been nice to have taken a quick dip...but by now,

it was time to take one last glimpse and head to the airport.

One magnificent resort hotel in a quiet spot on the island of Oahu.

I'm sure our Presidents and Delegates could also feel the warm Pacific welcome.

On our way to the airport we were greeted by protestors, waving, smiling and cheering.

But it wasn't for long...and we were stopped by security and police force.

We flashed our Canadian passports, smiled and sped along.

This was an unusual, yet very memorial event for some

Canadian citizens who love the Islands of Hawaii.

TOUCH DOWN!

It always intrigues me while we're in mid-air flying..

I love watching those screens indicating the height, speed and location.

The best part is when you see the marker at 10,000 feet.

then 5000...

then 3000...

5 feet...

and finally it's a safe touchdown.

And I can breath a sigh of relief.

Better yet, is arriving home and finding welcome notes.

It feels like I've been famished after being gone for a few weeks.

There's nothing like that old fashioned cooking awaiting your arrival.

Ah, yes, it's good to be back HOME AGAIN!

As the rest of you know...there's the unpacking,

mail sorting, book work, laundry, and cooking for the family,

but in the end, it's so good to come back for all of this again.

I would not trade it for anything.

All I knew was that I was looking for Booth 490!

Go to the right, then to the left and turn the corner again....

Way down the aisle, I could finally see the sign,

WINKS

And there she was to greet us.

How wonderful to be able to partner with this wonderful gal,

Wendy, who owns Winks Gift Shop in Chilliwack.

She invited us to share our MGCC book signings in her wonderful booth,

at the West Coast Women's Show, one of BC's largest events, this past weekend.

And here is our dedicated, fearless, leader...putting the final touches to our day,

always willing to meet, greet and share the story with everyone.

Women, from all walks of life, interested in knowing how we met,

where we came from, how we got started and excited to hear about us

sharing our author royalties with an orphanage in Ukraine.

The Good Shepherd Shelter.

Ellen whipped down from Seattle to join the gang,

she is a real trooper in more than one way.

Thanks Ellen for always supporting us and making the extra effort.

One of the highlights was being invited and asked to share at the "Kitchen Theatre."

"Gathering Family for Breakfast"

Here we demonstrated waffles, custard, berry sauce and egg cups.

Chef Dez was the Host, and loved being surrounded by our group.

We all know that he sampled everything.

At the end of the day...he announced

that the MGCC Women had one of the best presentations,

and we executed it in timely fashion as we only had 30 minutes.

But ladies, let me tell you...

we also took time to observe and watch the Firemen cook,

as they made their own stunning presentation.

We smiled as they licked their fingers.

But they were having fun.

At the end of the day, nothing was more heart warming,

to see how many women's hearts were touched by the story,

that Winks proceeds, for the books were going to feed an orphange in Romania.

Wendy and Dave just came back from Romania blessing an entire village with food hampers.

Women would just grab a book and say,

"This just makes me want to continue to support your ministry."

At 9:00 pm, I looked at Wendy...and I knew we were at the end of the day.

Thanks to Wendy and her whole team.

Thank you Dave for treating us with royalty and generosity.

You are a great team to partner with and we'd do it all over again.

Now, grab your car and dash out to visit Winks.

I'm sure it will be a hit on your Christmas list.

And This Was Thanksgiving 2011!

These girls can be seen conniving all the time.

You never know what they are up to...

but it keeps us all smiling and wondering.

We just finished celebrating our Thanksgiving weekend.

The weather could not of cooperated more perfectly.

How would you know that a trip to the shop would become eventful and entertaining?

Bikes...Striders, Trikes, Teeter Totters..

Young and old...joined in the fun of playing a balancing act.

Isn't that what the Family is all about?

And finally I gave the cue...

"Dunk the turkey"

the moment they had been waiting for.

So this year we deep fried it outdoors as the weather was superb.

Did you know that it takes about 1 hour to cook a 15 pound turkey?

And it never tasted better.

One little one could not help but pick the freshly cut turkey.

We enjoyed a delicious meal around the family table...

and we were barely finished and I heard the words,

"Can we go out and play in the dark?"

The sun was setting...the evening mist was settling...

out came the jackets, blankets and toques.

And we sat for hours sitting around the campfire,

introducing Smores for some.

Others began to sing...

"You push the handle in...you push the handle out...

the smoke goes up the chimney just the same?"

And on it went, actions and all.

And guess who kept the momentum rolling?

Old time memories were being revisited and

we will all remember this Thanksgiving....2011

We were thankful and recognized God's hand of provision

in many different ways as we reflected over the past year.

And my real honor was to take care of her small niece, Christy.

As you can see,

I am looking down at her constantly and approving her behavior in a reassuring way.

She actually remembers me as the lady taking care of her.

I believe today that she really is a Princess with a tiny princess of her own.

I wish you the best in your business as you continue to sell Tupperware!

This big red bowl created quite the excitement this weekend.

I was told that family members were all out of town.

So I thought I would experiment....

with Judy's Refrigerator Potato Rolls,
that can only be found in our MGCC Cookbook.

They are unique and are on my Christmas list!

Ah...I see a little hand stretched over the loaves...testing.

How high do they need to be?

There's nothing like peaking into the oven window...

and waiting for the end results.

"Are they still too hot to eat?"

"When can we eat them?"

Each day I cut up enough dough to make another quick pan.

Somehow...my kids said they would not be home,

but by the end of the weekend all the baking was gone!

Since when does yeast dough last that long?

Meanwhile the little one bounced upside down with glee...just waiting...

Bringing in the Sheaves!

It's been a year of reflection with gratitude.

For these young boys!

For this wonderful partner of mine... he's still checking the moisture content.

For the sun shining through my front door highlighting the fresh bouquet of dried wheat kernels.

For the bags of ground flour that have your name written on them...

For the smells of freshly baked wheat bread to be shared with family and friends.

For the reminders in nature that keep drawing me back to HIM!...

Anyone driving past, will probably hear me humming

the old familiar song...Bringing in the Sheaves.

Sowing in the morning, sowing seeds of kindness,

Sowing in the noontide and the dewy eve;

Waiting for the harvest, and the time of reaping,

We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves.

Sowing in the sunshine, sowing in the shadows,

Fearing neither clouds nor winter's chilling breeze;

What Good is a Dead Battery?

Our second day of touring took us through the Scenic Marine Drive,

also known as Dallas Road, eventually turning into Beach Drive.

We decided that we could share the road with other motorists.
I sort of liked sharing the highway with the wealthy ocean beach property owners.

As I rounded the first bend...I could no longer find my partner.

He was gone...

So, I decided I needed to capture these photos.

I was totally oblivious to his plans...I just saw these ocean shore lines and board walks which fascinated me.

Rounding yet another corner...gearing down and cycling up, yet another hill.
I'll admit...I walked up some hills.
But that just rationalized my need for making frequent stops.

Obviously, there is a difference in cycling with someone who's hard core and determined

or cycling with someone who's mesmerized by the photo opportunities.

Finally I found myself by a yacht club...thinking about trading in our business for a yacht.

It didn't take long and I was dreaming about
sailing off into the warm Pacific waters and never returning, or at least for a day.

Finally I perched myself on a rock, found a Starbucks, and reviewed my map.

Did he have the map? No..Who carried the backpack? Me!

Then I decided to TEXT him...wondering if he was even concerned about me.

But there, in the distance I spotted him...He had found his dream home.

Yes,..he loved the flower beds...and was dreaming.

He found his beach front property.
I think he had been waiting here quite a while...
He gave me a squeamish look.
He said....

"I can't go any further, my battery is dead."

I smiled...thinking how he could of well preserved the battery more efficiently.
While I walked up the hills, his battery used up it's energy.

When we finally caught up with each other and we enjoyed lunch at Smuggler's Cove,

had some good laughs, as we boarded the bus again with the right change this time.

Let's Talk About Tomatoes Instead!

Now that we have had our first rain, I heard that we should quickly pick all our tomatoes as to save them from getting blight. Well, my husband being a farmer, created his own special awning for them, protecting them from the cooler wet nights. I'm sure that next year the awning will have a remote control from the house.

I've had a wonderful harvest this year and if you want to know what to do with all the extra tomatoes, check out the simple secret at MGCC.
We have had a successfull weekend making Salsa! Forty pints is enough for this year.

If you want a great recipe, check out Judy's Salsa. You 'll keep making it over and over. I loved watching my daughter touch all the sealed jars as she was wondering, "Are they really sealed?" Remember, to know if they are sealed, there needs to be a slight indention and if you're good at hearing...you'll hear a little ping... as it snaps out the air.

We spent our anniversary weekend on Vancouver Island, one of our favorite cycling destinations.

We had learned the method of travelling by bus, so we thought.

On Friday morning, we put the bikes on the bus to start our adventure to Schwartz Bay.

Somehow, I did not manage to have the right change.

The bus driver said, "Just get on!"

Then I started asking if anyone had change on the bus.

The bus driver said, "You may not solicit for change."

How were we going to pay for our fare?

Visa?

"No, Madame"

When we arrived at our destination, the driver looked at my husband and said,

"Make sure you keep that women out of trouble."

She waived our bus costs for that day.

When you depart from the Tsawwassen Ferry, you will see the marked biking trail,
running parallel to Highway 17, Schwartz Bay to Victoria, 35 km,
also known as the Lochside Trail.
You don't need to worry about traffic other than cyclists.

Our first stop was at Michell's Farms where we devoured a few quaint apples.

We found Gravensteins...which I remembered eating off my father's orchard.

The trail took us through the rolling hills as we glided through the agriculture valley.

Barley Fields!

Onions! Carrots! Broccoli! Brussel Sprouts!

Pumpkin Fields!

Our faces felt the cool crisp air.

It was evident that autumn had arrived.

We made sure we stopped to pick those fresh blackberries that seemed to have a second harvest.

Big, Fat & Juicy!

Sunflowers smiled at us!

My biggest pet peeve?

Other cyclists who passed me, especially if they wore more age than me.

Up and around we travelled to our final destination.

Hours later we arrived in Victoria where we spent some wonderful days filled with activities.

You'd think that after 38 years we were compatible.

Our next ride did not sail us into any sunset.

I was beginning to wonder who was really in trouble?

Plenty of Harvest!

We celebrated our anniversary in the beautiful city of Victoria.
Thank-you for all your well wishes...We had a wonderful time.
But we were hardly home, and I had a days work in my mind...

I changed and ran out to see what needed harvesting in my garden.

I have never had tomatoes like this year.

Six beautiful plants of Beefsteak tomatoes have given me more than enough.

Guess what's happening here on the weekend?

I think we have enough tomatoes to can our Salsa this weekend.

Meanwhile, my potatoes were waiting to be dug.

Potatoes for soup, mashed potatoes and I tried something new.

I made my own potatoe chips.

Easy, quick, low fat, and simple.

Someday I will share that recipe with you.

Next, to my ever bearing raspberries.

Ah! Fresh raspberries, with fresh yogurt and granola.

That's a treat all summer long right into the fall.

Back off to the house...

I'm happy with my big haul and

tonight's supper will be straight from the garden to the table.

Thirty Eight Years Later!

We're still at it!

Thirty Eight Years Later!!!

I'm sure that this is a First and Last in our lives.

We never expected to witness harvesting wheat...and watching the end product.

Check out what we've been creating...and storing for the long winter haul.

Where? AT MGCC!

As you can tell...

We are country through and through!

No one will ever take that from us.

We till the soil and seem to feel an accomplishment when the barns are filled.

I think there's no question in my mind...that I'm in for the long haul.

The tractor and equipment date our years quite quickly, but I'm quick to state,

"There's no time for boredom or dull moments in our lives."

We've experienced many days of harvesting and working together.

And we won't give up...

The life of the country stirs deep in our roots and hearts.

I pinch myself daily thinking, it feels just like yesterday.

As you can tell, this has been one memorial event that we will never forget.

And I would choose to live my 38 years with the same guy all over again!!!

We don't take this for granted...

It's our Anniversary and we thank God daily for his hand in our lives...

and we cherish every year that he has given us.

First & Last!

It was the first time in many years that I could sit nestled under the canopy of the Empire Stadium.

Years back when I was just a little tyke...

I remember my Dad purchasing a TV, so that we could watch Football, Hockey and Bonanza!
The Lions played their very first game in the Empire Stadium in 1954.

I can still remember the days of these retired players...I was so impressed with their long yard runs.

I was probably about 10 years old...but I will never forget these names.

#15 Willie Flemming 1959-1966

#22 Joe Kapp 1961-1966

Years later when we were married...we had seasons tickets, but only till the babies came along.

#30 Jim Young 1967-1979

#5 Lui Passaglia 1976-2000

These were prominent names of the next era!

When one looked over the outdoor stadium...one new whose team was playing.
The color orange was proudly worn by the BC LIONS fans.
This was the Lions last game in the stadium.

The Lions bid adieu to the Empire Stadium over the Toronto Argonauts 28-6.

It was truly an amazing afternoon to think back of the many years where we packed our hot
chocolate and blankets and cuddled under the cold rainy nights.
But today was different.
It was warm, hot and sunny, and we shared the view of the North Shore Mountains as a back drop.

During half time they paraded the historic athletes from years gone by.
Yea! Jim Young!I believe that young athlete is 68 years old.

The pep band also played the tunes from many years back.
Go Lions Go!
We could still whistle along with the tunes.

To the right of me sat a young women who was attending her very first game.

So I politely explained the reasoning about the rule, "Three down and 10 to go!"

She cheered, she clapped and then asked me,

"What did that mean?"

But she always knew what direction the Lions were running.

As always, men sat with their binoculars staring at the Lions Cheer leading squad....

Theystill bring many smiles and chuckles to their audience.

This day was memorial as all the players were leaving their jerseys with the die hard fans.

I decided to grab the jersey from Geroy Simon. He was my pick of the day.
Simon led all receivers with 117 yards on six catches.
The touchdown was his 88th as a Lion, setting a franchise record, passing Willie Fleming.

So we salute the Empire Stadium only to cheer on our next game in the newly renovated

BC PLACE!

See you all there!

I Need My Pivacy!

You've probably seen photos of this house in the background.

This is the first time in all my life....

that I have neighbors who have a full view of my home, and yard.

I'm not sure if I need to build a new hedge...

construct a cement wall,

or just get to know them.

I did the latter,

I dropped in and found out that our names were identical.

I'm glad I met our new neighbors and will spend some time ~~chatting~~ hollering over the fence.

But it reminds me of the time when my little one runs to the bathroom and says...

I Need My PIVACY!!!

That's sort of how I'm feeling!

Back to School, Back to Routine!!!

I woke up this morning and noticed the easterly winds blowing...

thinking it looks like we're having an Indian summer.

This was a perfect day for the Schmidt family get together.

There's nothing better than celebrating Labor Day Weekend.

We all know that it brings routine and structure back to life.

When the Schmidt family comes together,

we love nothing more than to reminisce about our labor day experiences.

We all knew what it was like to dig an acre of potatoes before school started...

Dry them.

Rub the dirt off of them.

Sack them and drag them into storage.

Alas...we were ready for school.

To be honest, I was so excited that I did not have to work at home anymore.

Meanwhile Brother Loren drives on the yard...with his Chrysler LeBaron convertible,

the car that we all remember...

as this honored our Mother's last wish,

...to ride in a red convertible.

And then, there's that stubbed toe...

Only Auntie Mikki could bring healing to this injury...

a band aid and a bit of natural healing.

A potluck of our favorite memories is pulled together quickly from many wonderful sources.

Kotletten

Freshly ground wheat bread

Rollkuchen and Watermelon

Fresh Cucumbers, Tomatoes, Peaches, and Blueberries

Corn on the Cob

Seven layered Salad...

And you can't have a potluck without a fresh plum Platz for dessert.

And as Sheryl said,

"Mom, would of said you need to drizzle some icing on it to give it that extra touch."

And that's exactly what she did!

The trampoline continues to becomes a source of fun for young and old,

as it gives them a chance to show off their stuff.

Into the late evening shadows they enjoyed their last leisurely day before the bell rings again!!!

And the adults enjoyed sipping on their coffees and chatting about life.

A big THANK YOU to my SIL's for transforming my kitchen.

I bet I can hear many of you secretly echoing with me, the same phrase...

"Back to school...it's time for routine!"

I'll Miss My View!

A quick glimpse through my kitchen window.

August is almost over and these little ones just like many others,

will be preparing to go back to school.

Just when I thought I had a pool for the boys...
Drift took the big leap and cooled off first.

It didn't take long...and someone else joined him.

Oh My Goodness...

He loved it when Drift would shake off the water and give him a good spray.

Somehow he imitated this move...but was not as successful.

Teasing the old boy...give him a ball..and he'll do anything for you.

He is hoping he will jump on the tramp with him.

I think he's dog gone tired....

And I can't lift him up anymore....

Poor Drift!

Meanwhile the little man finds another creative move...

somehow I don't think of these things..

Give them the right tools and they will figure it out.

"Oma, I can't reach..."

How many times did I hear those words.

Soon he found the tire and it was just the right height,

cushioning him from any hard falls,

as he twists himself round and round and I can hear his shrilling screams of joy.

Next, he's off to the shop!

He's made his big pick of the day, as he examines it carefully, before he takes his big bite.

Meanwhile big brother has found that water and tramps keep you cool.

Until a heard a horrendous screech....

This was not a joyful sound.

I quickly glanced through my window,

as I started running...but his Opa was there already giving him comfort.

Now they were looking for the wasp.

That's what barefoot, grass and summer is all about.

The hot summer activiites finally got the best of him.

Hope that you too, have enjoyed summer.

I know, that I'm lucky with my kitchen view...

I will miss those days as they go back to school.

I spent the last few days cycling in my favorite city, Vancouver.
My day started out at a spot that holds memories forever.

Oh...the memories of the Olympic Cauldron and all the fanfare that came its way.

Only to experience a story of thankfulness from someone who cared.
I stopped to take a few photos of my favorite bridge...Lions Gate.

We were just sitting on the bench, people watching and chatting it up...

the bike path was busier than usual... like traffic driving into Vancouver after a long weekend.

Young, and old, first time cyclists, and those seeking the adventure of a good workout.

Everyone was out to enjoy another hot summer day.

We were just approaching my favorite spot...

These flags indicated that we were close to the patio at English Bay Cafe...

when suddenly I noticed I did not have my bike helmet.

In a short time...I pedaled against traffic, another 5 km...

meanwhile, other cyclists were hollering at me...

"You are going the wrong way."

Well, what else could I do???

Sometimes I drove on the walking path...

but they, too, started yelling at me...

I was determined...

Now, I was the crazy cyclist!

I finally located the spot.

No helmet.

I stopped, cycled a bit farther, and turned around feeling defeated.

As I slowly turned around...

I spotted a lady carrying a helmut.

It approved my name.

She had seen me leave it on the bench and new I'd come back.

She waited over thirty minutes.

Bless her heart!

I told her that I would also in turn continue to

lend a helping hand the next time an opportunity presented itself.

I truly felt blessed by her kindness.

Tonight we could feel the stillness of the warm summer evening.

Sitting quietly outside,

thinking of the days events,

sharing an unexpected dinner plan with family,

feeling subtle gentle breezes on our faces,

making us aware of God the Creator who has given us each day.

We have waited a long time for a quiet summer evening.

I need more of these evenings.

I savor and cherish them to the last moment.

They bring joy and peace.

Threshing Bee in the Valley

I woke up...

looked out the window as usual, and noticed.... trucks, tractors, wagons

and threshing equipment from the 1920's lining up on our small acreage.
Was this day actually going to happen?

It didn't take long, men and women of all ages were forking sheaves onto the wagons.

And just like in the good old times...they too, took a break, leaning on their forks.

Meanwhile the boys were wondering what was falling from the sky.

It was Opa's time to take the boys for a walk and share with them what was happening.

One wagon down, as they finished loading it into the threshing machine. Four more to go!

Men from the Atchelitz Threshermen's Association brought their threshing machine from the 1920's.

They loved to reminisce back and forth.They were all reliving life.

Meanwhile I was thrashing up a storm in my kitchen providing them with lunch.

I was not in the least prepared today...but there's always something.

Kathy's Cinnamon Buns and Lovella's Paska Buns!

And a quick call for Pizza Delivery.

Of course the boys enjoyed the ride of their life...as we made our delivery.

And they came in hoards...the smell of food brings people together.

Now, there stomachs were satisfied and off they went back to work,

Only to find out that the old McCormick would not turn over.

One man came to me and said,

"This tractor is like a woman....You need to talk nicely to her."

Ah...these fellows know about life.

And I thought...How many men does it take to start a tractor?

On lookers of all ages came and went all day.

This young woman was my hero of the day...she knew how to work and stayed right to the end.

And of course, for this little man, he climbed up and down the stacks of straw,

and loudly cheered that this was the best Farm Day Ever.

They Are Safely Home Again!

July 12th saw this young couple taking on the challenge of cycling down the

southern coast to San Fransisco, approximately 1300 km in 27 days.

We value our tradition of saying good bye with an early morning breakfast.

I'm standing out at the street....and there I see them approaching us.

She's waving like always...

He's all thumbs up and ready for this challenging trek.

This sums it up...they both love to cycle and love the adventure.

Meanwhile my mind goes back to the slogan I saw in Amsterdam!!!

Happy and eager to go....the Teachers are on their way...

but not without a blessing from parents who pray for safety everyday.

Up, up and away they go!

Travelling along the early morning roads with trucks roaring behind them.

Meanwhile I was given the honor of hosting Drift for the last month.

Somehow he found his way into my heart.

This morning was exciting as I began to realize they were close to home.

The texting started early...and before long we made plans to meet them in Bellingham.

And of course, it was fun to greet them with a home-made meal, their favorite consisting of

steak, freshly grilled vegetables, fresh corn, potatoes, and raspberry pie.

Meanwhile back at her home, we welcomed her

with an authentic sheaf of freshly cut wheat.

She's already asking what day we will grind the wheat and make some fresh bread.

Looks like my week is planned.

Brithish Columbia's Heritage is Alive!

Who says the you can't grow wheat in Chilliwack?
History is being made all over again!

Now, we know why the traffic has come to a stand still as cars/trucks slowly rolled by.

Meanwhile, it's BC Day, another statutory holiday which gives British Colombians another day

to celebrate their achievements and relax with family and friends.

Here's Cousin Gerri helping hoist up the flag.

The top part of the flag consists of a union flag with a crown in the center. The lower part of the flag consists of a setting sun on a background of blue and white waves. The British Columbia Day Act was first introduced to the Legislative Assembly in 1974. The aim of the Bill was to create a statutory holiday on the first Monday in August to recognize the pioneers in the province.

Speaking of pioneers, we've had quite an exciting summer. As you drive down the road, you will notice wafts of golden colored wheat, blowing in the wind, waiting to be harvested. Winter wheat was planted as a cover crop during the fall season and because of our unusual weather, this field was not planted according to schedule. No Chilliwack Corn from this plot.

A growing demand of interest increased as the field of wheat began to ripen.

Last week a group of men from the Atchelitz Threshermen's Association came out to inspect and assess the wheat for dryness.This group loves to give the residents of Chilliwack a chance to see how farm machinery might have worked in the past. They carefully assembled the 1920 McCormick Deering binder and gave it a trial test.

In the earlier days this same binder was drawn by horses, rather than a John Deere. This is a first for us as we watch with awe, how they cut the wheat, and how this antique machine binds the sheaves together.

A sheaf is a large bundle of unthreshed wheat which is bound together by straw or string, and then later all the sheaves are set up-right in the field with their heads together creating a stook. This protects them from any moisture. And who picks up all the sheaves? They thought this would be the perfect job for me.
From here it will be loaded onto a wagon and brought to Heritage Park to be thrashed this weekend, at the Chilliwack Fair. Hope to see you there!

You've Been Married How Long?

I love our Life Group. We've become friends.

In our church we have Life Groups, where people come to share,

discuss scriptures, pray for each other and have fun.

We all love celebrating birthdays, babies, anniversaries.

You name it...

You can count on us to make it happen.

This past week our Life Group met for an outside BBQ.

The rain trickled down and soon we were gathered inside around the table.

Can you see who that is sitting at the head of the table?

They are the leaders of our Life Group!

Yes, they appear to be serious...as they command our attention.
They mean business!

Until...

the group started singing, Happy Anniversary!

And guess what, they chimed in also, not realizing we were singing to them.

Do you see the twinkle in their eyes?

Then Elmer reminisced about his version of when he first laid eyes on Judy...

"Roller skating in Lynden".

They shared about their honeymoon,

their getaway plan,

the happy times in their lives.

the difficult times in their lives,

and from there they continued to share about,

Faith, Family, Friends, Food and Farming...

We all know that these thing are dear to them.

Those "two" are celebrating 40 years of marriage.

In a world where marriage is not taken serious anymore,

it's truly an honor to celebrate this special occasion with them.

This was another perfect occasion to celebrate with our Life Group.

Judy and I have been friends since Gr.8 in high school.

The mystery remains untold, why we were not at each others weddings.

You two have left a legacy for many family and friends.

We wish you many more happy years together as you roll along.

We know by your laughter and smiles that you have enjoyed life together.

"There is no Box made by God nor us,

but that the sides can be flattened out and the top blown off,

to make a dance floor on which to celebrate life."

Here' s My Secret!

I'm sure this pie will wet your appetites.

Just dig right in and be my guests.

I've kept some of you wondering what was the secret to a fail proof pie crust?

We just finished celebrating Pie Night at our home with my European Guests.

Somehow our family has not transferred those pie making skills to the Germans.

Just mentioning the word, PIE.....
It didn't take long and 25 family members made their way around the Island
in search of fresh raspberry pie, apple perishky, and raspberry ripple ice-cream cake.

I posted a few weeks ago...about my frustration with keeping the pie crust from shrinking.

Run over to MGGC and you will find my secret.

Others of you will walk away saying,

I could of told you that....

But then why has no one told me that over the past 40 years?

She Keeps Me Smiling!

We finally arrived in Vancouver...

Trying to manever the big farm truck ladened with our bikes becomes a special challenge in itself.

By the time we parked it underground...

we left it there.

It's much easier being chauffeured by a taxi then trying to park the big farm truck.

Until...

we are riding along...

and suddenly the window opens,

and I hear this wild shrill whistle...

I glanced aside to see what the commotion was all about.

Well, that farmer man of mine spotted his daughter walking along the street,

as we neared the restaurant which was to be our meeting place.

The cab driver stopped and asked what was wrong.

"Oh, nothing...I just see my daughter walking down the street." he says excitedly

The driver asks, "Where are you from?"

"Chilliwack...."

that word defines us very quickly.

He's always been proud of his kids no matter where they are.

This morning as we enjoyed our breakfast together,

the waitress brings over a Zippy Cup to my table setting and she's smiling at me.

The waitress played along and said, that my daughter had ordered this special for me.

In my house you will notice that I have a collection of Zippy Cups.

Somehow there's a special connection between those Zippy cups and it keeps us smiling.

It's Summer Time, Regardless

" Mom, can you keep the kids?"

I'm sure that there are other's identifying with those words over the summer days?

I love how he eagerly props himself up on the chair,

his little bare feet draped around the stool.

He's already unwrapped the foil from the margarine.

What's next?

He's obviously done this before with a bit of extra help.

Participaction is part of his philosophy.

We agreed quite quickly that baking cookies was on the list.

I finally figured it out, that if I put the bowl in the sink...

it would not go flying off the counter.

What better way then to teach them to grease their hands and the pans.

It schmeckts so gut!!!

I love watching him lick that spoon.

I can tell that someone has taught him how to play

pat a cake...all sorts, sizes and shapes.

We made Char's Oatmeal Ice-cream Sandwiches.

They are a keeper and what kid wouldn't love that kind of cooking?

How can you tell it's summer time?

The best part was jumping on the tramp with the timer outside

while the cookies were baking inside.

Trust those kids...they have all the steps figured out to baking.

There's no time to waste in their minds.

It's called "Whacky Time at Oma's!"

Whether it's raining or sunny, it's still called Summer Time.

True Menno's Confess About Shrinking!

Tonight we are making pies at LEPP's FARMS!

They provide weekly cooking classes varying in many different cuisines.

LEPP Farms is one of our sponsors who donates their proceeds to a local hospital charity.

But tonight we're on.....

Would you believe that we all get nervous about demonstrating in front of others?

So today...I hastily made my way through baking several different pie doughs.

One of our favorites is, Pie by the Yard...

Another one is Traditional Apple Pie!

We all have our favorite recipes and they vary slightly.

Some use Tender Flaky and others use Crisco.
Some use butter, margarine or lard...

Is there a right recipe or a right method to our madness?

Some of us do it the way our mother's taught us.

Some choose the method of our Home Economics Teachers.

Some just eye ball it and call it rustic.

I must confess I never had success baking a single crusted pie...

It always shrank...and I would get so discouraged,
so I chose by default to make double crusted pies.

But today...I was filled with revenge...why could others have success, but not me?

After all, this is the time to make single crusted pies filled with strawberries and raspberries.

I finally found a solution, and I will continue to make single crusted pie shells that do not shrink.
GUARANTEED!

As you can see, the edges are nice and high and very little shrinkage.

Amsterdam ~ Metro Mania!

We learned that there are two ways to visit the city..

Canal or Hop On ~ Hop Off Bus!

Everyone needs a canal ride...so we did just that.

As you can see it was pouring rain...so that was the perfect pick.

In the distance we heard the words Anne Frank House and the steeple of the Westerkerk,

one of the first protestant churches in Amsterdam.

Those words caught my attention. Definitely that was one museum on my list.

Days later the women folk took a stroll out to her house.

By now we were familiar with Leidestratt, then you can turn left on Prinsengracht.

Keep walking....and guess what...no line-ups.

We took the tour of the ever famous Anne Frank House.

The canal house at 163 Prinsengracht was the temporary hiding place of Jewish girl Anne Frank and her family (and four others) during the World War II Nazi occupation of Amsterdam.

Here, visitors can see the secret annex where she wrote her world-famous diary.

After our tour...we stopped and looked out the windows, sat down in the coffee shop,

and took some time to reflect how many of our mothers' made similar challenging adjustments.

We rode past the NEMO Museum, filled with Science and Technology.

I wanted to see a For Sale Sign on this little vessel.

I wanted to purchase an authentic Dutch Canal Boat and have a picnic..in the rain?

The evidence of scrap metal along the canal's water edge.

Way too many BIKES if you ask me.

The AMSTEL Hotel, the place for celebrities.

Even though I'm part of a team that published a book, somehow...the budget did not fit.

This little house boat with all the flowers was my favorite.

I did not see a For Sale Sign.

Would it not be fun to just wander through and have a cup of coffee?

Floated past the Rijk Museum, Diamond Museum, and the Van Gogh Museum.

You need more than time to cover all these places....

Until it was time for the HOP ON HOP OFF BUS!

The bus stops at eighteen different stations giving you a tour of the city highlights.

So we jumped on...and enjoyed the ride until....

It STOPPED!

We sat...and waited...everyone got off..

We waited longer...it was a long walk to our hotel.

Then the bus driver came and asked us what we were doing?

He told us it was Quitting Time...Had we not read our pamplets?

Little did we understand his dialect nor his instructions.

The Farmer folks are asking,

"HOW WE GO HOME???"

"Take number 5 bus...it always takes you back home."

Number 5 bus comes sailing by and does not stop...

The bus driver hollers at us...

"You need to walk to the bus station...."

Meanwhile the women folk had spotted another way of transportation.

We knew how to get back home, an old beat up Mercedes Taxi.

I'm sure you are all wondering about the red light district.

That's how far we got...it appears to be a red light from an outside heater.

Looks like a chicken brooder to me.

There's always something happening on the streets.

How can you tell we're in Holland?

I'm thinking I forgot to purchase a pair,

after all, no one wants to know how many pairs of shoes I had.

So, it doesn't matter how you see Amsterdam,

where ever you turn there is nothing but excitement and action.

Wait till you hear about our coffee shop experience.

Amsterdam ~ Bike City

Yes, he felt a warm welcome to Amsterdam when we entered the docking station.

What else can a farmer say when he gets close to his cows?

A big smile, because he knew there were some farm tours planned.

It didn't take long for us to figure out that we had no priority over their bikes.

I think we were all knocked down, several times, and soon formed a human chain hoping for protection.

It's an absolute risk trying to cross 6 tracks of metro, car, and on-coming bike paths all tied together.

Brains Travel on Bikes?

We have no clue about biking in Canada!

Bikes were all over the streets, tied to posts, trees, cars, waterways, boats..

You name it...Bikes were stored in multi level car garages...

How could you ever identify your bike?

Parking a car in Amsterdam cost about 4 euros an hour...

now we know why they ride bikes.

No fitness programs needed in Holland.

Some rode up to 10 km to work, some more and others less.

As you can see, young and old, no helmets, they just whizzed past us,

sitting, standing, sleeping, side-saddling or whatever worked.

One was so daring as to strap his cello on to his bike and cart.

This seemed like the norm....

As you can see, I was a bit taken back by all the baskets they carried.

They became part of the fashion statement in Amsterdam.

Which basket do you think I liked the most?

I think I have a new project for my bike.

Whether walking or shopping or cycling, fashion seems to be a big statement in Amsterdam.

High boots, leggings, colorful shoes, pointy shoes..running shoes,red pants, patterned leggings,

It didn't matter what you wore, whether upside down or right side up.

I loved the exciting life of the downtown culture in Amsterdam.

Let's Celebrate Canada's Birthday!

We've always celebrated Canada' Day in many different ways.

Two years ago we hoisted our flag to the skies and sang, "O Canada."

Last night we celebrated with our family indoors on a cool summer night.

While I was in Europe, I ordered Bocconcini Salad whenever it was on the menu.
It became a favorite and tonight I shared this with our family.

If you want a simple rustic salad with fresh flavors, head over to MGCC.

Today during the day, we plan to pack a simple picnic and head up towards the lake.

And hopefully the skies will clear so we can watch the fireworks.

I truly can say after my travels to Europe this past June, that I am so proud to be a Canadian.

(Put aside the most recent riot in Vancouver)

I've been in many countries...but there is no place like HOME!

Canada is my Home Land and I am so thankful for our country.
I agree with the words by John Diefenbaker,
"I am a Canadian, free to speak without fear, free to worship in my own way,
free to stand for what I think right, free to oppose what I believe wrong,
or free to choose those who shall govern my country.
This heritage of freedom I pledge to uphold for myself and all mankind."

Hurrah for Teacher's Pets!

Today is the last day of school.

Hurrah!

Celebrations and Awards!

And here we have Drift, The Teacher's Pet.

I was reminded that we also acknowledge Dog Celebrations.

Looks like Drift took many awards at his agility class this last week,

as he proudly takes his spot on stage.

Soon he will be visiting...so I've preparing my home.

I've been on a hunt to bring a new spark to his life.

He arrived on my doorstep this week.

I found him stuffed in a corner, whining, with pillows toppled on top of him at Grand Pappy's.

The owner thought he needed a new home.

We looked at each other, smiled and made a swift deal.

I was the proud owner of a new dog and we promptly named him, Spark.

He sits quietly in the family room and

waits for me to come home.

Guards my front door step.

Never digs in the flower beds, but rather appreciates their beauty.

Most recently, I've allowed him to sleep on my bed.

As you can see, he's added a real Spark to our family.

It's just the beginning of another journey, but I think I'm going to like it.

I'm sure the Teachers' Pet will be astonished.

The Travelling Bag!

I'm barely home from one cruise and off to the next...

Do you still remember that hand bag from my Disney tour?

Well, here it is again...only things have changed.

My passports are in hand and I'm just about to board

my last flight home from Amsterdam....with a bag full of tulips.

(not baby wipes)

My last four days were spent in the beautiful city of Amsterdam,

but what made this time so special...is that I met Ellen, the owner of this quaint little gift shop.

She answered all our questions about shopping in Amsterdam.

She suggested that we visit and shop at a nearby village of Amstelveen,

a suburban municipality in the Netherlands.

She did not even know us more than 15 minutes, and she offered to drive us there.

She just looked at me and sized me up to be about 40 and said,

"This is the place you need to go..and you will enjoy yourselves, and

don't forget the fresh cheese market," she explained.

Oh, did I forget to tell you, that this was the ladies shopping excursion,

while the men decided to opt out and check out the farm tours.

She new exactly what we needed, but we braved the metro system and found out that we

could actually read maps and make sense of them if you turned them in the right direction as you walked.

Thank you Ellen for your wonderful hospitality.

Her little boutique left you with the real charm of Amsterdam.

You were a jewel for us.

Wow, that Bag seems to carry all the things that women like, not what little boys need.

That BAG has held out and wants to share with you, the good and bad about it's travelling days.

By now, some of you are wondering and others have figured it out.

In the past three weeks, we travelled with some wonderful friends to Scandinavia.

They made sure that all the bags were there, counted and packed frequently.

Thanks Frank & Elma for taking such good care of us during our travels,

and making sure that we arrived at the airport and returned in a fashionable manner.

There's nothing like being chauffeured around in a big farm truck and

nothing feels better than being safely HOME AGAIN.

I drove my SUV into the garage with the back door lifted up!

Quickly, I threw it into reverse...

By then HE was at the door....

"Leave it alone...go for a walk....I'll deal with it."

I went for a walk.

Came home...

Noticed some changes.

What would he be doing on top of my SUV?

He installed a marker...
so that when the window hits the marker...
Marg knows the vehicle is in perfect position.
I've done it for how many years?

We're Home Again!

Towards the last day,
they were eagerly waiting to return back home.

Our tour guide, Steff, had done one amazing job.
You can see, she is checking over the list once more,
making sure that our luxurious limousine would deliver us HOME!

Oh to see the sights of Vancouver and know that we had arrived.

Is there a normal, again for me?
What would I do without all those wonderful moments
with using my hand bag as a catch all for all..
I can still remember those words,
"Oma, I'm hungry..."

And the older one said,
"I need to find your blog called
Marg's Home Again...so I can read about our good times."

What Is He Doing?

I found my quiet spot...
The Cove!
Just a place for adults, no youngsters allowed.
Just a quiet place to sip on a nice quiet coffee...
so I thought!

UNTIL!!!

My beautiful ocean view was totally interrupted by this guy.
Strangely enough, he had harnesses, tie-backs, chains,
belts...swim caps..and you name it.
He carefully tied his belongings to a chair.
I'm watching with interest, as I wonder
"What is this guy up to?"

On goes his hat...
Off goes his jacket..
I'm thinking..
"Maybe I should sneak down and untie this yellow bag."

He jumps in the water making a huge splash as if to say,

"Hello World.. Get in Shape.. Stay Healthy!
I'm over 70 and I'm still having fun!"

Oddly enough you've got the picture.
He tied himself with a harness onto the a ledge of the pool deck.
And now he was beginning a work out that lasted 45 minutes.
I was tired just watching him.
But I noticed the folks in the Cove, all, just like me, perked up
and watched him set up all his contraptions,
while swimming and splashing like crazy,
as he enjoyed his own resistant method of swimming.

Most of the people raced for dry chairs!

Then it came to me...
He looks like one of our family members.
We had fun...more than you can imagine...
And we laughed many times as we identified our family quirks.

Way to go Klaus!

What Time is IT?

Any of you taking a trip in the near future with grands?
Make sure they have a DSI
(modern day version of a game boy)
Guaranteed that they will not be asking you the same questions.

"What Time Is IT?"

It entertained them in the airport lobby.
Timothy who was part of the family,
became like a big brother.
Those three were inseparable.

On the San Fransisco cable car.
Do you think they were interested in going up and down hills?
Not the least...except when the driver halted suddenly on a
steep incline and decided to go into reverse...
They all remember that shrieking moment.

In the park...
Don't they almost look bored?
Yes, we finally put some restrictions on there fun.

They could play two hours a day during our formal supper.
It actually gave us time to visit and enjoy each others company,
except when in the middle of everything...
they all needed to take their bathroom breaks.

The Golden Bridge

We spent a day in the Port of San Fransisco.
What a remarkable day as we took a tour of this magnificent bridge.
This was the longest span in the world till 1937.
Today it is the 9th longest suspension span.

We had a tour in the morning....via bus,
but to sail under the bridge, toward evening
was another view I never anticipated.

Total length: Including approaches, 1.7 miles (8,981 feet or 2,737 m)
Middle span: 4,200 feet (1,966 m).
Width: 90 feet (27 m)

The real "Golden Gate" is the strait that the bridge spans. It was first named "Chrysopylae," meaning "golden gate," by Captain John C. Fremont in 1846.

It towers 746 feet above the water.
500 feet above the roadway.

It was an unbelievable journey to cruise under this span with clear skies.

Yes boys, some day you will ask us about this bridge,
and we'll be able to tell you that we took you there....
Now they were anxious to go back on the cruise boat.

Disney Welcomes Young at Heart!

The final moment for boarding arrived.
Eager faces and voices that have been waiting.
"How much longer?"
"What time is it?"

Young and old were more than delighted to see the water park.

Our captain aboard, rang out his too familiar tune....
which we all recognized quickly.

They made sure we felt more than welcomed as we
knew this would be home for the rest of the week.

Off to the sunset we sailed...
knowing there would be good times ahead.

Prior to boarding the Disney cruise line,
we enjoyed the beautiful warm sunshine in Disney Land.

The favorite spot for this family?
You guessed it and the melody is still ringing in my head.

This time the song was interpreted in German,
und wir singen mit.

What a delight to see their expressions of the animated characters,
expressing the culture and music of the countries of the world.

What little child could not escape the park with out one of these balloons?

Disney Here We Come!

Can you imagine 17 family members from 3-93 years of age,
boarding a air flight together,
being stripped of our jackets and shoes,
tripping over each others baggage,
trying to file through security in procedure,
trying to find each other and locate our belongings?
It's all in the FAMILY!

How many bags?
How many heads?
Who's gto Silas?
Who's got Levi?
Hey, where's Marg?
(Probably in the can!)

That was the only place to escape at times.

For some, the line-up was too long.

Our leader continued to trod on...
Reminding us...
"All play and no Work!"
We all knew who she was...
her red highlighted hair, Mickey Mouse hat, and Mickey teddy bear,
helped us identify her very quickly.
You could tell that she was prepared for the on surge
of questions fielding her from all ages and angles.

"Didn't any of you read your documents?"

We trusted our leader to have all the information.

But one little guy had no worries....
How many times did he just take time to quickly crash out.

Transformation Begins!

I woke up and looked out from my den.
My front yard had an extreme make-over!
Our landscaper came early...and placed all the plants.
Wow! is all I could say.

The transformation process has been started.

I've dreaming and envisioning for awhile.

Things were beginning to take shape.
I needed some color and sun.

What would we do with out God's wonderful array of beauty?
The best part is that he allows us to become the Gardener's.

One Thousand Gifts ~ Restoration

By now, you know what I mean...
it's messy and dirty and that's not how I envision my front yard.

All those shrubs are over 20 years old,
old and stunted, sort of like me...
not too much healthy growth anymore.
They need to go!

Out came the old Ford tractor, once more...
to do it's needed work in tearing out tree stumps and shrubs.

Front and back.
Out came the shrubs, one by one.

The ground was rotavated and tilled and tilled again..
More top soil was brought in and dumped on the clay below.
Isn't that often what happens to us...
Life sometimes strips us to the bare walls
and we need to be replenishing all over again.
Wouldn't we all love an extreme make-over?

Meanwhile, I've relished many thoughts of a book that I'm reading called,

"One Thousand Gifts"

I love this book as it teaches me how to continuously embrace things,
and that's when I realized while we were transforming our yard,
into something beautiful once again, our God wants to continuously transform us.

Those kind of thoughts have helped me to stay focused through
the hard tasks of some of these projects.

It's good to recount blessings while things are not always perfect.

Unseen Pleasures and Treasures!

Did you know that a pile of gravel brings joy into the lives of the young?

Building tunnels and bridges.

Crawling through....
Crushing it down...

How many times did he empty his boots?
Because they had ROCKS and that does not suit his fancy.

I think renovating gave us some unseen pleasures.

Sometimes it's the simple things that give us the greatest joy.
